SEASONAL CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN ANNOUNCEMENT
 
POSITION:  A seasonal position assisting with maintenance of park and wildlife areas managed by Cerro Gordo County Conservation.
 
EMPLOYMENT PERIODApproximately May to September, with the time period somewhat flexible for students.  Limited to 40 hours per week.
 
SALARY: $17.00/hour with no benefits.
 
DESCRIPTION:  Assists the Operations Supervisor and Natural Resource Specialists with management activities in county owned parks and wildlife areas. Work activities may include, but are not limited to, buildings, grounds, equipment and infrastructure maintenance and repair, turf mowing, management of desired and volunteer woody vegetation, management of prairie and cool season vegetation, and campground restroom facility maintenance and cleaning.  
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated interest and/or experience in conservation, land management, facilities maintenance, or outdoor recreation. Preference given to applicants pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, wildlife biology, ecology, forestry, agriculture, or a related field of study. Relevant experience may be considered in place of education.
 
REQUIREMENTS:  The ability to effectively apply knowledge and common sense to solve problems and/or achieve work objectives; ability to routinely stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, balance, climb and operate power hand tools; ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and be exposed to dust, fumes and loud noises; ability to occasionally lift 75lbs; ability to follow written and oral instructions; possess a valid driver’s license; and maintain an acceptable driving record.  Cerro Gordo County is a pre-employment physical and drug screening employer.

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SEASONAL CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ACTIVITIES: 
Assist with all aspects of routine seasonal park & wildlife area management and maintenance related to habitat, facilities, and equipment.  The conservation technician works under the direct supervision of the Operations Supervisor or Director.  The workweek is limited to no more than 40 hours per week, with some non-routine hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform skilled and unskilled maintenance/management tasks in parks and wildlife areas.
  • Operation and routine maintenance of tractors with implements, self-propelled mowers, weed trimmers & other handheld power tools, and other specialized habitat management equipment.
  • Management of prairie and cool season vegetation, planted and volunteer woody vegetation, and wildlife food plots.
  • Assist with management of wetlands and fisheries.
  • Routine facility maintenance of shelters, picnic tables & benches, signs, fire rings, etc.
  • Assist with routine trail maintenance.
  • Park and campground turf mowing and trimming.
  • Campground restroom and shelter house cleaning.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Operations Supervisor or Director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Preference given to applicants pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, wildlife biology, ecology, forestry, agriculture, or a related field of study.  Relevant experience may be considered in place of education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The ability to follow oral & written instructions.
  • The ability to work without direct supervision on occasion.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with co-workers and the public.
  • The ability to work at satellite areas within the county.
  • The ability to effectively apply common sense to solve problems or achieve work objectives.
  • The ability to maintain accurate safety, work, and equipment maintenance records.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme hot, cold, rainy, snowy, and windy weather conditions and be exposed to dust, fumes, and loud noises.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 75lbs 40 inches high and carry up to 15 yards.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to routinely stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, balance, climb an 8-foot step ladder, and operate power/hand tools for extended lengths of time.  Specific task duration of 2 or more hours at a time for 8 to 10-hour workdays.
